Trump's National Security Strategy identifies many laudable (if also obvious) goals. But its assessment of threats and strategies for addressing them are misguided. First, the "Western Hemisphere" is not the main threat to U.S. national security. China and Russia are. This misdiagnosis is a strategic mistake. Second, to deal with China and Russia, the US needs allies, including in Europe. Berating our democratic allies in Europe -- accusing them of eroding democracy when we are leading in that race -- does not advance U.S. security interests. Strategic mistake. Third, in our new era of great power competition, our ideals -- democracy, freedom, liberty -- remain one of our greatest advantages over autocratic China and Russia, as they did during the Cold War. Yet this NSS makes no mention and therefore proposes no strategy to promote these ideas. Strategic mistake.
