Hey Tim - I see how it can seem that way, like this is a pretty niche Hollywood thing when the country is on fire. I think there’s one clear response to this. If you care about what happened to Jimmy Kimmel, you should care about this. Trump said he wanted Kimmel off the air on *July 18* — right after Colbert was pushed out. Kimmel was pushed out in *September*. What was it that gave the Trump administration the ability to push him out? Nextstar Media’s acquisition of 64 Tegna stations, which required rule changes from Trump’s FCC chair. That FCC chair then turned around and signaled that he wanted Kimmel off the air. In other words, that merger gave Trump the hooks to push Kimmel out. Already, some of the loudest voices on the right are saying this is a “woke” merger. This thing needs DOJ approval. You think that Trump’s DOJ isn’t immediately thinking about how to push out John Oliver (HBO), Roy Wood Jr. and Amber Ruffin (CNN)? Any major media merger gives Trump DOJ, FCC and FTC the clear ability to do the culture policing that the right have always accused the left of doing. (There is also a really interesting worker surveillance / AI job replacement angle here, but that’s for another day.)
