Everyone sees the second reason. But many people think the first reason is delusional cultish thinking or disingenuous marketing to paper over simple greed. That's the biggest knowledge asymmetry: not that bitcoin has value--people are starting to get that--but that it's good.

If bitcoin was only 2 and the number just kinda went up magically, but it did not make for a better world, I wouldn't waste any of my time on it. I'd buy some and then check in every 6 months to see how it was coming along, but no real energy would be spent. Life is too short.
