i interact with gig work posts a lot (used to do doordash way back when) it’s always baffled me who is consciously choosing to do the grocery orders. you do way more work for a delivery way less likely to earn a good tip. it took me one grocery order to learn this for myself
on paper, i really like the concept of gig work. for no-skill, binary, uniform tasks, there should be very easy engagements where you sign up and work as much or as little as you want. in 2016, i was making $22/hr out of high school at my leisure. and i would continue to hop on when i was home from college for a bit of extra $$. it was great and i figured out how to maximize my $$/hr pretty quickly but in practice, gig work also attracts the “least selective” labor. which is probably the ideal end state for the companies but also an end state that is arguably net negative overall.
