for the AIE Social tonight I picked @wickedmovie : For Good screening and I somewhat regret it. my greatest indictment of the movie is that it has made me take Ben Shapiro seriously as a movie/musicals reviewer (!?) Cynthia Erivo is the greatest Elphaba since Jessica Voss, but without spoiling it, the casting is offset by the overindulgent other choices in the adaptation, nearly all of which basically do not work at all (and, reader, I was TRYING). It is quite possible that if you come from a complete blank slate, not knowing eg what happens to Fiyero, which sadly is the majority of the audience, you might get really invested in their extra characterization and worldbuilding effort that could only be done on screen. But then why on earth are you effectively forced to watch the Lord of The Rings Extended Edition 5 Hour Directors Cut version of this 3 hour musical if this is meant to be your first encounter with the story? The new songs don't work, the flashbacks are way too much of a blunt instrument, and For Good, literally the movie's One Job, fell kinda flat for me if I'm being really honest (only because it is very faithful to the OG, and the adaptations of all the other songs were not and positively so, so my bar was high). No Good Deed was awesome, got applause, and is worth the price of admission though.
