NEW: We are facing a growing crisis of economically and socially dislocated young adults The share of young people who are: - Not working - Not seeking work - Not in education, and - Not raising children is approaching 10% in the UK and US, and has doubled in the UK in a decade
NB this group is obscured in standard NEETs stats (young people Not in Employment, Education or Training), since NEETs include stay-at-home parents & jobseekers Strip those out to focus on people who are completely economically & socially dislocated, and the trend is much worse
Many factors: • Housing crisis (people living with parents less likely to enter labour market) • Anxiety & mental health (makes transition into work harder, esp in UK due to fears of losing benefits) • Steep rise in UK youth minimum wage (less hiring of young people)
