It resonates deeply for me and my relationship with AI, my thoughts below:
1. We have always been tool builders in search of revealing more truths and answers, as well as pushing the limits of our capabilities
2. There is no final map, there is no ultimate truth. There is only the journey and the quest for answers. It has always been the way. Even with new tools, we only peel back layers of the onion but we will never get to its core. It doesn’t mean we won’t stop trying
3. The special thing about LLMs is it could arguably be the greatest leverage-creating tool we’ve produced. Because of how instantly it expands a single human’s capability, and also how widely accessible it can be to billions of people. The bull case for disruption is unprecedented. We are in a bubble but no one can predict when it’ll pop, because there is no perfect precedent for this revolution.
4. There is a romantic aspect to LLMs that we love, which is that we don’t fully understand its limits and inner workings. The questions around AGI and mechanistic interpretability and steering models to fit our workflows….they are enticing on the premise of the question itself, not necessarily the answers they uncover. We can’t quite make sense of what we’ve created or what this can be, and we love that. We are low key obsessed with it. It’s the type of tool building we enjoy the most because it pushes us to keep exploring the frontiers.
5. My deepest belief about the potential of AI is that it amplifies the potential of each human. I also have spent my whole life like @danshipper in search of great answers and truths: in books and biographies of great people, in family and friends, in music and in the arts…I’ve always looked up and around at the world and asked more questions than I probably ought to. I am a curious person, and most answers don’t truly satisfy my curiosity. But AI rekindled my curiosity in a way I wasn’t expecting, because it gave me both answers and the capabilities that I didn’t think I could have as a single person. It pushed the limit of what I thought I could do.
That is the worldview of AI as a tool that I care about. That is what I want other people to realize. That is what I want my work to contribute to.
It has never been a better time to be a human, than in the age of AI.
