Max bidding on MegaETH sale today. I'm not in awe of their design, but it's for sure very practical and is objectively better than what other L2s can currently offer (but have to consider it has not been released yet).
I don't like seeing L2s doubling down on centralization, but if other aspects are done right, it might be a viable path and make more room for Ethereum L1's value proposition due to clear separation of concerns and strong reliance on L1 security properties.
The main problem I see with adoption of any new L2s is the social coordination problem: liquidity is king and it's extremely hard to compete with entrenched players in that field.
So it'd definitely be an uphill battle for the team as we all may find out that users don't actually care about "faster" UX once it becomes "good enough". I hope MegaETH won't burn their treasury on inorganic incentive programs and quickly fall into irrelevance as so many promising products of the past have.
Wishing them good luck in their efforts :)
But to be clear, my two most favorite things in L2 space still are:
1. Based appchains + TOOL (similar to what Spire intend to build)
2. Whatever @_Enoch is building
I consider MegaETH's approach to be 100% practicality over ideology, which is not particularly interesting as it's an obvious continuation of the current trend, but it has the highest chance to work out for the exact same reason.
I also feel like what the guys from Rise are doing is kind of in MegaETH's shadow right now and I wish they get more traction too just to balance this out.
