Here is my prep sheet for a recent TV interview
I was interviewed on @CNBC earlier this month (as a guest and not for my own show for once!) via a virtual interview. This was my prep sheet. Couple of pieces of advice that can hopefully be useful:
1. Know your key 3-5 points - I have always my key points I want to make with a solid example for each. What questions the anchor asks is a bit irrelevant. They are just a lay up to deliver your key points.
2. Keep it punchy - my answer and examples are always less than 45 seconds (which goes by very fast on TV or on stage). Be short and to the point.
3. Be ready to pivot - if any tricky question, make sure to know how to pivot via a “whilst xxx is very important, what is important to keep in mind is xxx”. U.S. politicians are the masters at this. I cover this in my video below.
4. Write down the name of the anchor - (here it was Manisha Gupta) but it helps to create a personal link with the anchor. This is very simple but makes a big difference. U.S. politicians always do this as well.
Here is a video on how I prepare for my TV interviews (this was when Bloomberg would still invite me as I didn’t have my @CNBCArabia show yet!):
