When I started in the late 90s, opensource development was a hobby for many, with much F/OSS being built as passion projects by engineers in their spare time, or young hackers (like I was) in dark hoodies and darker spare rooms under the ever blinkenlights.
In those heady days before Linux became entirely commercialised I was doing an 'apprenticeship' at a Linux consultancy surrounded by many of the people building the tools the internet depends on today.
One of the oft repeated debates around the lunchroom table, after 'tabs vs spaces', or 'vi vs emacs' was 'Software engineering, Craft or Science?'
In this post-SaaS, post-startup age when Software development is almost exclusively a commercial pursuit, the old craft-or-science argument has long been forgotten, it almost makes no sense to a young engineer starting out today.
Watching this video bought me straight back to that time when people talked with passion about the craft of engineering, it makes me wonder why the music industry is allowed to celebrate these intangible, emotional things while we cannot.
