Update: No sooner had the IDF begun its partial withdrawal than fighting between Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip broke out. Hamas ‘security forces’ immediately replaced the IDF, sending a public signal that it remained Gaza’s governing power. Hamas is attacking rival militias controlled by prominent Palestinian families/gangs. There have been firefights and public executions. Hamas fighters dragged a number of men from one rival family into a public square, forced them to kneel and executed them in front of a crowd. Despite two years’ pounding by the IDF, Hamas still has the capability to reassert itself. It was a long way from being wiped out. Under the peace process Hamas is now meant to give up its weapons and resile from any future role in Gaza. That looks increasingly unlikely.
