A few months ago, a mysterious actor broadcast 41,523 OP_RETURN messages to 39k+ Bitcoin wallets holding 2.3 million BTC — claiming the coins are “abandoned.”
It looks like someone’s trying to use abandoned property law to claim dormant Bitcoin 👀

The campaign came from 3,700+ sender addresses and targeted wallets dormant nearly 6 years on average. 98.8% of them have never moved their coins.
Each message carried a “notice” under the Salomon Brothers name, warning holders to respond within 90 days — or risk forfeiting rights via constructive possession.
In plain English: someone is attempting to invoke abandoned-property law to seize Bitcoin they don’t control.
Whether it’s a serious legal gambit, a social experiment, or a prank on the blockchain, it raises real questions about property law in a world where keys = ownership.
