this is dystopian not because AI is creating characters. animation/CGI created magical characters for a century: mickey mouse, bugs bunny, rocket raccoon it's dystopian because AI is creating humans. instead of expanding reality, we can only imitate it as we've known it

this is of course symptomatic of an era that only knows how to treat culture as nostalgia to play it safe in order to protect all financial risk instead of seeing AI as a new medium to try new things, we can only imagine it as a way to polish the same reality we've always known
