I've always loved the Panhandle in San Francisco and yesterday I realized why. Despite being such an unassuming park (set between two multilane thoroughfares), the trees are enormous. Most trees in California are second- and third-growth, dating from the 20th century; the aftermath of voracious logging. But the eucalyptus and cypress trees in the Panhandle are up to 150 years old and consequently huge. There's a sense of majesty walking amidst their trunks.
