Early Days of Ethereum is teaching me something new every day, even though I am more than a decade into my own journey. I'll start dropping each of those @ethereum learnings onto a forever-tweet-thread here as they come, as well as on the website. 🧵
@GaryLachance @TheAndrewWagner @cammyjee @KKurbegovich @internetarchive @TaylorGerring @DavidBenKay @diiorioanthony @ethereum @aantonop @OutlierCanada @Radomysisky @BitAngels @michaelterpin @vic4wong @SGgrc Congratulations on having such a long-running and successful show, @SGgrc!
Stripping the massive list to Replying To people, to de-spammify.
@diiorioanthony @epicenterbtc @EthCC @MeherRoy @crainbf @epicenterbtc is a great show Such a great evergreen resource and record of the whole blockchain ecosystem. Now up to episode 615!
@crainbf @epicenterbtc Anything you have to share from that 2014 era would be gratefully received by the way, Brian! I would love to get your profile built out, and any photos, links, articles, memories or anything else you would care to share. I have you as doing some Ethereum stuff from May 2014?
@crainbf @epicenterbtc I had half forgotten that the Parity (Hello @paritytech) client was only one of three planned phases. It was named as such because it was aiming for parity with existing clients (geth, cpp-ethereum, ethereumj). Civility and Tenuity were to follow!
@crainbf @epicenterbtc @paritytech This story reminds of Hyperledger Fabric. It was originally intended to be an open source framework for building blockchain clients (a fabric, if you will), kinda like Substrate. An initial goal to build a Bitcoin client. But then the IBM biz people made it into a product!
@token2049 @Viggith @PawelBurgchardt @chfast @julianzawist So I've been quite on Early Days of Ethereum on twitter during October, but there has been plenty happening under the surface. 60+ commits 131 open issues Our first merged external PR. From @jasoncarver: Nicer layout for the articles, plus images now:
@Viggith @PawelBurgchardt @chfast @julianzawist @jasoncarver I recorded four separate interviews at Dark Prague (@InstituteCrypto) at the start of the month, which will be landing at some stage in the near future. Thanks @AdjyLeak for facilitating (and being part of one of them himself). Ryan Taylor's story:
@Viggith @PawelBurgchardt @chfast @julianzawist @jasoncarver @InstituteCrypto @AdjyLeak And I've just scheduled a recording session for next week with a very high profile and wonderful Etherean. That will be episode 6, due for release on Wednesday 5th November. I'll just leave that one danging!
@Viggith @PawelBurgchardt @chfast @julianzawist @jasoncarver @InstituteCrypto @AdjyLeak I'll come back and do some retroactive tweets about updates made during October when I have a gap in my crazy schedule!
@antiprosynth @EthCC My slides:
@antiprosynth @EthCC And the video of my presentation:
@antiprosynth @EthCC The video of my presentation:
@ETHLDN When were the first commits for the early Ethereum client codebases? - pythereum (Vitalik) - 19th Dec 2013 - cpp-ethereum (Gav) - 23rd Dec 2013 - go-ethereum (Jeff) - 26th Dec 2013 - ethereumj (Roman) - 1st May 2014 - ethereumH (Jim) - 14th Sep 2014
@ETHLDN Maybe even by then, pyethereum was not able to keep up? Later we had ... - ethereumjs (Martin Becze) - 19th Aug 2015 - parity-ethereum (Gav) - 24th Nov 2015 - ruby-ethereum (Jan Xie) - 3rd Feb 2016 And later Besu, Erigon, Nethermind and Reth. + consensus clients.
@LefterisJP @ethchris @BitcoinUKmedia I also took an hour or two and put together a page for DEVCON0. Thank you, @avsa, for the prior detective work on the photo!
@LefterisJP @ethchris @BitcoinUKmedia @avsa I'll do a page on the Berlin legal entity when I get a chance, to have at least basic information like:
@LefterisJP @ethchris @BitcoinUKmedia @avsa A blast from the past - doing an interview with Chris De Rose. In January 2018, on the fourth anniversary of the announcement of Ethereum at BTCMiami 2014, I took the last minute decision to go to Miami and to break bread with "my enemies". All the Bitcoiners I had argued with:
@mperklin @TaylorGerring Today we recorded Episode 6 of Early Days of Ethereum, with @ChrJentzsch of ETHDEV and @slockitproject:

Coming next Wednesday: Early Days of Ethereum Episode 6 - @ChrJentzsch of ETHDEV and @slockitproject! "And this white paper of Vitalik, If you read it again, it's almost a prophecy. Except NFTs, everything's in there, from DAOs, from ENS, domain name systems and all of that."
@mperklin @TaylorGerring @ChrJentzsch @slockitproject In his office, Christoph still has the physical smart-lock which was used in the DEVCON1 demo!
@MycelFi I first met Jutta together with the rest of the @paritytech crew in February 2018 during my "Peace Mission" with Gav:
@MycelFi @paritytech She was part of the Fellowship of @EthMagicians kick-off session at @EthCC in Paris in March 2018, launched by @jemenger and @greg_colvin:
@MycelFi @paritytech @EthMagicians @EthCC @jemenger @greg_colvin She was also part of the EIP0 meetings (both private and public) in Toronto in May 2018 (along with my better half, @AlisonbobEth, @lrettig, @thegrifft, @nicksdjohnson, @lightcoin, @hudsonjameson and many more:
@MycelFi @paritytech @EthMagicians @EthCC @jemenger @greg_colvin @AlisonbobEth @lrettig @thegrifft @nicksdjohnson @lightcoin @hudsonjameson I'm not sure what she's doing these days. Her X account has not been regularly used for many years. Hello, @jutta_steiner - we miss you!
@MycelFi @paritytech @AlisonbobEth @lrettig @thegrifft @nicksdjohnson @lightcoin @hudsonjameson @jutta_steiner She left Parity in December 2021 as per her LinkedIn.
@MycelFi @mperklin @TaylorGerring @ChrJentzsch @slockitproject Don't give up on Ethereum and tar everybody with the same brush. There are many dreamers and optimists working towards non-NGU goals. There will be many at the Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress next week (@web3privacy), and there are lots of Regens. Hello, @thegrifft and @owocki!
@MycelFi @mperklin @TaylorGerring @ChrJentzsch @slockitproject @web3privacy @thegrifft @owocki And you, perhaps?
@MycelFi @mperklin @TaylorGerring @ChrJentzsch @slockitproject @web3privacy @thegrifft @owocki And as for Early Days of Ethereum - it's a work in progress. The initial scope, by historical fluke was Ethereum Foundation to end of Ming Chan era (July 2014 to Jan 2018) and anybody working on Ethereum in the earlier stage. But of course, Ethereum is a lot wider than that.
I most recently saw Dimitry in Bogota for DEVCON6. He did some work helping us with cross-client testing on Ethereum Classic.
@vic4wong @SGgrc Hey @dimabuterin, Just re-reading "Out of Ether" I spotted that you also noted this specific episode as your first exposure to Bitcoin, and that you mentioned that to Vitalik at the time! Major infection vector. 😀
@feindura Now, for that range, I am now just missing: - "Dr Emanuela Costa - Quantitative Analyst, SCRUM Master" (complete mystery-man, on website, mentioned by Charles in one vid) - Tim Hughes (Ethash) - Roland Wilder and Sarah O'Neill (interior design for Berlin office)

whitepaper to "red wedding" (nov 2013 to jun 2014):
Ethereum Foundation and EthDev (Jul 2014 to Feb 2015):
the interregnum (mar 2015 to jun 2015)
the ming dynasty (jul 2015 to jan 2018) still largely TODO:
the infinite garden is where the project currently ends, with the arrival of @AyaMiyagotchi and Albert Ni.
@AyaMiyagotchi And I think we entered a new era in 2025, though we cannot know what this era will be called until after the fact. World War I, for example, was The Great War until many years later, when WW2 had happened. I don't think we're in the Infinite Garden anymore. Wartime CEO?
Treasure trove! Most of @gavofyork's iconic early presentations (including DEVCON0 and Allegality) are still up on SlideShare!
Today's discovery: "the ethereum project: learning to dream with open minds"
Yesterday, I went digging on the UK legal entity, called ETH DEV CIC (Community Interest Company), which was first incorporated in August 2014, very soon after the incorporation of the @ethereumfdn) in July 2014. There is a blue plaque on the wall for it!
@gavofyork @MihaiAlisie @VitalikButerin @TaylorGerring @ethereumfndn Yesterday, I went digging on the UK legal entity, called ETH DEV CIC (Community Interest Company), which was first incorporated in August 2014, very soon after the incorporation of the @ethereumfdn) in July 2014. There is a blue plaque on the wall for it!
@ethereumfndn I also added a little bit more information the Stiftung Ethereum page, splitting up legal entity changes by "epoch" and adding the org chart, which I was so, so delighted to see appear:
We can never know what history will call current phases of history as they are enfolding, but I think we are no longer in the Infinite Garden. "Wartime CEO" is my best guess (tip of the hat to @tkstanczak who is doing an amazing job!)
I tightened up the visuals on the People page, re-adding DEVCON0 buttons where there were previously over-bulky embedded videos:
You can still see the nice embedded videos on the person's actual page, ie. @LefterisJP:
And a couple more photos, for @alexberegszaszi and @lisacheng, both January 2016 starters:

#EthCC kicks off in a spectacular lecture theater with a talk by @BobSummerwill on ending tribalism in ethereum. Great way to kick off ✌️ "ETH has succeeded beyond our wildest dreams so can we please all be friends again?"
And a few more profiles photos again, nearly filling out the grid for "stiftung ethereum and ethdev" and "the interrugnum" epochs: - @LianaHusikyan (who has worked on Mix and Remix for 10 years!) - Jannik Luhn - Frithjof Weinert
@LianaHusikyan I also finally located Tim Hughes's Github handle (having been looking for programmerTim for years), and discovered that David Braben, who founded Frontier Developments, where Gav and Tim worked together, also founded @RaspberryPi_org!
For Kelley Becker, I only have this appalling low-res screenshot from the Frontier Berlin office photo which @LefterisJP and @ChrJentzsch have both shared at various times. I am not sure who took the photo, or whether there are multiple other photos from that day:

Many people are asking about who is who in that picture from my phone back on Ethereum's launch day. So here we go with what I remember. Starting from Vitalik and going clockwise. Vitalik - @VitalikButerin Gustav Simonsson - worked with us a bit and then went on to Dfinity Christian - creator of solidity @ethchris Liana Husikyan - solidity and main dev of remix @LianaHusikyan Christoph Jentsch - EF testing suite, founder of slockit, creator of the DAO, now corpus ventures @ChrJentzsch Gavin Wood - ethereum founder, polkadot founder @gavofyork Vlad Gluchowski - Worked in whisper. I think he is also @gluk64 's brother. Kelley Becker - Was just hired as chief operating officer. Did not stay long Vlad Zamfir - EF research. Casper and more. Still doing research on the field: @vladzamfir Felix Lange- Go ethereum developer. Emacs user (❤️ ). Still with us (fjl in github) Frithjof Weinert - Hired at the time as CFO for the foundation (?). Fabian Vogelsteller - @feindura. Developer mainly focused on web3.js and mist. Now founder of @lukso_io Aeron Buchanan - Was doing OP stuff for the EthDEV UG. Later went on to work with Gavin in parity. A very nice guy. Lefteris Karapetsas - That's me. I worked on Solidity compiler and the c++ client at the time. Jutta Steiner - Worked at the EthDEV UG in various positions, mostly testing and preparing the audits if I recall. She later went on to parity with Gavin. @jutta_steiner Yann Levreau - @Yann300 Worked on remix and is still part of the same team.
@laurashin Ming - "She described a scenario later, where I could, if I wanted, become Pres of the Board, with Vitalik as Chairman. Also, she let me know I can choose my own advisory board (not Kelley)." It took Ming from August 2015 until June 2017 to finally get rid of Kelley.
@laurashin Does anybody have other or better photos of Kelley Becker in 2015?
@laurashin Only a handful of missing photos pre-Ming Dynasty now: - Daniel Hams (new discovery) - Dr Emmanuele Costa (mystery man) - Marko Simovic - Roland Wilder - Sarah O'Neill - Bas van Kervel (intentionally private and face-hiding, I think, so will not chase)
@laurashin ^ @ChrJentzsch @LefterisJP @ethchris ?

So @wmougayar tells me that his Ethereum journey started a lot earlier that I was aware of. He first met @VitalikButerin way back on 1st January 2014, which puts William at the very "top table" of Ethereum OG-ness:
