All RPC services have now been fully restored, and user-facing services are back to normal. We’ve implemented a fix for the root cause to prevent recurrence. A full post-mortem will be published soon. Huge thanks to all teams for acting quickly to get all RPCs fully functional again.

Update: Almost every RPC provider is back online, with user-facing services following. However, some providers may still be experiencing degraded performance. Thank you for your patience as we accelerate resolutions. We will share another update once full restoration is confirmed.

UPDATE: Approximately 6 hours ago, Heimdall experienced a temporary disruption that led to a delay in consensus finalization. To be clear: the Polygon PoS chain has remained live, but due to RPC issues, users may experience disruptions accessing various apps. We are now actively collaborating with RPC providers to accelerate resolution and restore user-facing services. Our team is fully engaged, and we’re confident in a swift return to normal service. Check back here for further updates.

Now that the dust has settled, I want to take a moment to reflect on last week's Heimdall v2 migration. Validators were required to import the entire history of Heimdall v1 into an entirely new chain. The previous history had persisted since Polygon’s genesis, and all this had to happen while the chain continued to produce blocks! Its been said already but this really was the equivalent of open heart surgery. Heimdal v2 completely revamps the chains consensus engine, updating it from Tendermint to Comet BFT. It also integrates the ABCI v2.0 (a.k.a. ABCI++) module and now allows features such as pre-block validation and vote extensions. Aside from removing a ton of tech debt, the migration improves state sync between Polygon and Ethereum and reduces finality time to 🚨~5s 🚨. This monumental effort has taken months of meticulous planning and coordination, not to mention many hours of sacrificed sleep. Let's all take a moment to congratulate the stellar team and ecosystem of node operators that made this possible. 👏 One of the most sensitive operations during the migration was importing the genesis from Heimdall v1. With an incorrect history, Heimdal v2 nodes could have been corrupted, and the chain may not have been able to progress past the previous halt height. For this reason, a checksum of the existing Heimdall v1 state was generated, enabling operators to know that their import was correct. Here is a clip of this checksum being generated LIVE for the first time by Polygon core devs right before the migration process started. Enjoy!

Product Announcement 🚢 ~5 Second Finality + Modernized Core Infra on Polygon PoS Polygon PoS engineers have completed deployment of Heimdall v2 to mainnet, upgrading the consensus layer, decreasing large reorgs, and bringing transaction finality to ~5 seconds (down from 1-2 minutes!) I want to take a moment to recognize the huge achievement of rolling out this upgrade. Heimdall v2 was the most technically complex upgrade the chain has seen since its 2020 launch. And arguably one of the most complicated in all crypto history, second only to the Ethereum Merge. It's more than just changing the engine of a multibillion-dollar airplane mid-flight, it's like redesigning it in real time while keeping every passenger safe and on course. There was a huge amount of diligence and coordination across a ton of stakeholders - Polygon internal team, validators, RPC providers, dApps, client developers, and many more. Running the upgrade required triaging issues across many different entities, fixing problems on the fly, and working around the clock and through the night to minimize impact. Despite the longer timeframe of maintenance, no big reorgs occurred and the migration went successfully. Maintaining decentralization is not just a technical challenge, but a coordination challenge that becomes even more apparent in times like these. Lots of learnings here for us to improve upon our processes and increase visibility. On behalf of the entire Polygon Labs team, we owe a big thanks to the node operators and providers that coordinated with the migration process! And a big thank you to our community for your patience as we continue to coordinate with remaining apps. This upgrade is the culmination of years of deep technical work, and represents a huge step forward for Polygon, eradicating massive technical debt and positioning it as one of the most secure, rapid, and innovative chains for onchain payment solutions & RWAs. Faster consensus significantly reduces the chance and depth of reorgs, creating an environment for better UX, superior onboarding, and safer settlement. A complex release of this size represents a huge bet on the competence of our company to execute. Polygon delivered and we will continue to keep delivering. It hasn’t even been a month since we launched Polygon’s improved roadmap and the team has already shipped the first steps toward gigagas. In the coming months TPS will increase to 5000, instant finality will come, and Polygon will connect to Agglayer to unleash a new era of aggregated blockchains. The purple chain is massively scaling and we’re improving it everyday. We're in a zero-to-one mentality mode to ship fast and aggressive for the community. Bhilai Hardfork Live on Mainnet The Bhilai hardfork has been released on Polygon PoS mainnet for block number 73440256. The upgrade accelerates throughput and extends support for improved account abstraction with EIP-7702.
