Imagine a ‘Truman show’ that spans the West, in which almost all the major visible players are actors, most of them working downstream of a recognizable contract—they play their parts, and get things they want in exchange. But a sizable minority are acting out of a rational fear they’ll be ruined or killed if they break character. The paid actors don’t know who, if anyone, is in the latter category. The very existence of the fear-motivated actors is hotly debated. That debate may be partly or entirely inorganic.
