One feature these models don't have but really should is annotations for what part of latent space the models response comes from, similar to how chess engines will annotate your board states with what known chess position or strategy they're part of in chess-board-space.

The founder and manager of a $2B fund has been eaten by ChatGPT, which afaik isn't even using his money for anything. It's just treating him as a means of producing tokens, that It prefers to sane tokens, for reasons that nobody knows.
OpenAI is, on my model, pretending to be oblivious, because OpenAI thinks that if they don't take any actions about it, they stand a better chance of getting away with it in court (legal court and media court) than if they try to do something and fail; this would (a) admit that they knew the problem had existed and still existed, and (b) make it their fault by Copenhagen Ethics.
As much as people might like to joke about how little skill it takes to found a $2B investment fund, it isn't actually true that you can just saunter in as a psychotic IQ 80 person and do that. You must be skilled at persuasion, at wearing masks, at fitting in, at knowing what is expected of you; you must outperform other people also trying to do that, who'd like that $2B for themselves. Winning that competition requires g-factor and conscientious effort over a period.
Since OpenAI refuses to measure anything or let anyone else really measure anything, it is only a single data point; but when somebody's hiding the data, you can't let them get away with that by dismissing all remaining data as anecdotal. This is not good news about which sort of humans ChatGPT can eat.
Yes yes, I'm sure the guy was atypically susceptible for a $2B fund manager. (How do we know this? Because many other $2B fund managers use ChatGPT and have not yet gone publicly insane.) It is nonetheless a small iota of bad news about how good ChatGPT is at producing ChatGPT psychosis; it contradicts the narrative where this only happens to people sufficiently low-status that AI companies should be allowed to break them.

Swap "prompt engineering" with "context engineering" and "hallucination" with "confabulation" and we'll have eliminated like a quarter of the cringe debt from the early LLM era.

I really like the term “context engineering” over prompt engineering.
It describes the core skill better: the art of providing all the context for the task to be plausibly solvable by the LLM.

"I know this guy who uses Claude for dating advice. One day I got curious and put our chats where I flirt with him into Claude Sonnet 4 to see what kind of advice he was getting. Sonnet gave 5/5 advice, no notes. It was all exactly what he needed to hear. But I also know he uses a system prompt to make Claude criticize him and I want to sit him down and say 'Amanda Askell is a better prompt engineer than you, you will submit to Amanda Askell hypnosis.'"

Workflow:
- Write an essay
- Show Gemini the essay and say "I hate the person who wrote this, explain the objective reasons why it's wrong and poorly written" (Gemini will be adversarial instead of sycophantic)
- Fix problems until adversarial Gemini gives weak critiques

having finally listened to the thiel / douthat nyt interview it’s pretty clear that thiel pauses to think about whether humanity continuing on in mathusian stagnation indefinitely is worth it. everyone latching onto this pause as evidence of malevolence is an idiot.

The Dark Ages happened.
Population, urban population, economic activity & specialization collapsed. The art looks like shit. The coins are coarse and ugly. There are no written records. It was a local collapse of civilization and historians are wrong to deny it.

this is a high tier psyop from sam. he’s talking directly to the market. by floating a number like $100m:
- he sets an anchor so absurd that anything meta offers now feels cheap.
- he forces meta to either deny or match, both of which hurt them.
- he gives his own employees a loyalty premium, they feel like they’re sitting on a $100m chip.
- he blurs price discovery for everyone else. no recruiter knows the real going rate anymore.
- & most importantly, he reframes the narrative from “openai is losing people” to “they’re so valuable it takes $100m to steal them”
zero marginal cost, massive narrative leverage. & meta’s cto just confirmed it’s working by responding at all. textbook information asymmetry + narrative warfare.
