As always, @MLiebreich on the money in his latest.
"Yergin and co. play several other games. They promote the so-called primary energy fallacy, by which the world’s apparent dependence on fossil fuels is inflated. The real figure is not 80% but 68%, because of the differential inefficiency of fossil fuels compared with clean energy, which is also missed by Lomborg, Smil, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and others. If you think the difference between 68% and 80% is not that important, think about the difference between clean energy meeting 32% or of 20% of demand – instead of one fifth of energy demand being met by zero-carbon sources, it’s already one third. The transition is considerably more advanced than its detractors would like us to believe."

To make nuclear cheap, you have to build at scale, the same design, over and over again. Lots of them. China does this. No one else today is. A small nuclear industry isn't viable in the US. Only a nuclear industry building lots of reactors is.

John Bistline29.7.2025
Interesting article in Nature suggests China has driven down nuclear power plant costs and kept them stable over two decades, beating the "cost escalation curse" with local supply chains and standardized designs.
I wonder how much is transferable to other country contexts.

Watch this US citizen being arrested. He says: "I got rights." The officers say: "You've got no rights." Then they say: "THEY're starting to resist more. We're going to end up shooting some of THEM." Who is THEM exactly? Racial profiling cops deserve to be in jails.

The inability to approve transmission lines - particularly interstate - is one of the largest energy policy failures of the US.

Shanu Mathew28.7.2025
"Even under the most conservative scenario of needed transmission expansion—2.1x by 2050—DOE’s findings imply the need to build roughly 5,000 miles per year of high-capacity transmission to support grid reliability, reduce congestion, and enable continued economic growth."
*Checks notes*
We haven't done that in the last 15 years. Not even close.

At the moment, a lot of twitter accounts appear to be copying each other and saying that we know nothing about the world prior to the creation of writing. So I thought I'd share one of my favourite pieces of ancient art. This is the 'Lion-Man' & it is about 40,000 years old. 🧵1/

GMOs (as regulated today) are safe. Exhibit 9,538.

Simon Maechling26.7.2025
For over a decade, anti-GMO activists demanded long-term studies in mammals.
Not mice.
Not rats.
Primates.
Well... scientists did just that.
And the results are in.
Let’s talk about a 7-year feeding study in macaques.
