Told this story on stage yesterday: In 2019, at an art-tech event in New York City, I received a visit from an unexpected muse. A panel onstage was pondering intersections of creativity and computation, while a speech-to-text program called Otter AI transcribed the discussion, words typing themselves out across the bottom of a monitor in real time. Entranced though I was by the humans’ insights, I found myself mesmerized by the invisible ear and hand of our digital scribe. Phrases evolved on screen as sounds emerged from mouths, captured and interpreted on the fly, then refined as context became clearer. When one of the speakers touched on the challenges of communication, Otter wrote: "Language is a bird." Then quickly corrected itself: "Language is a burden." I bolted upright. What had just happened? A fleeting glitch, a digital hiccup? For a moment, technology had transcended transcription, inventing metaphor... “Language is a bird, a burden…” I love this line. Alliterative and wry, highly compressed, intensely imagistic, pleasing on the tongue and teeth, a tangle of visceral sounds that, together, point to something above and beyond their individual meanings. Language is indeed a bird: it can flock and soar, traverse boundaries, and perform the most intricate maneuvers with effortless grace. It is alive, airborne, defying mundane limits. Like a bird in flight, language is a spectacle of fluency and wonder, constantly adapting to shifting currents, winging its way through space and time. Yet language is also a burden. It staggers under the weight of history, culture, politics, definition, obfuscation, all we cannot or will not say. It is heavy with expectation, laden with the responsibility of conveying truth in a world of disinformation, miscommunication, and consequences. Wings break. Beaks snap. Songs still...
