your brain functions in “power-saving” mode by default. it’s a state of conserving energy that stops you from doing creative work and pushes you to procrastinate. but you can literally train yourself to enter a “flow state” of deep focus at will. here’s how:
> design your environment to flow you into a focus mode. this means elimination before optimization (tools, apps, etc.) put your phone in another room. no notifications or distractions. the environment must swiftly slide you into work mode.
> the 5-10 minutes before you start the work matters. short breathing exercise, journaling, anything that works for you. it’s about clarity of intention and making your target obvious.
> single focus is key. pick one clear focus and work for it.
> 15-25 minutes in work, you get an itch to check your phone or distract yourself. set a distraction stopwatch and time how long you can work before needing to distract yourself. giving in at that point is the worst thing you can do. once you cross that threshold a few times you recognize the feeling and trust the process. you must acknowledge the temptation and resist it. each time, the neuro-pathways associated with deep focus strengthen. it’s literally a training process.
> take a real break. no phone. walk around, look out the window, etc.
> the compounding effects of this practice will be visible as you do it more and more.
> you need to “identify” yourself as someone who operates this way by default and protects their focus and reinforce that identity every time you sit down and push through.
