🇨🇦 The family of a 12-year-old girl critically injured in the Feb. 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. Maya Gebala was shot in the head and neck while attempting to lock a school library door to protect other students during the attack at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Eight people were killed, and two others were injured. Police say the suspect, Jesse VanRootselaar, had earlier killed his mother and 11-year-old half-brother at their home before going to the school. The civil claim, filed by Maya’s parents, alleges OpenAI failed to alert law enforcement after employees reportedly flagged concerning ChatGPT posts connected to the shooter. It also claims the company failed to detect a second account allegedly used to continue discussing violent scenarios. OpenAI said the account linked to the suspect was disabled last year for violent activity and that it later notified the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the Feb. 10 attack. The company has not yet been served with the lawsuit and has not responded to the allegations.
