Today in history
March 8, 1770
A massive funeral procession wound through the streets of Boston, bearing the bodies of four Boston Massacre victims:
Rope maker Samuel Gray
Sailor James Caldwell,
Sailor Crispus Attucks
& 17-year-old apprentice Samuel Maverick.
These four had lain in state at Faneuil Hall before being carried to the Granary Burying Ground for burial in a shared vault. The event drew an immense crowd, possibly thousands, with shops closed and bells tolling solemnly across the city and nearby towns, as a powerful act of public mourning and protest organized in part by figures like Samuel Adams.
What about the 5th Massacre victim?
Recent Irish immigrant Patrick Carr, who had also been shot by British soldiers during the March 5 massacre, succumbed to his wounds several days later (March 14) but would be laid to rest beside the others in the same plot.
Who is the 6th name on the marker?
That would be Christopher Snider, the young boy who was killed by a British informant, whose murder 11 days earlier had thrown Boston into a fury which all came to a head on March 5, 1770 with the Boston Massacre.
