After playing more than ten singles matches in Southern California, I finally realized why Chinese tennis will never catch up to American tennis.
In fact, there are two key points to playing tennis well.
One is physical fitness. Here in the U.S., the average physical fitness level is around 3.5 to 4.0, which is generally a notch stronger than in China. This translates to being able to run particularly well, having strong movement ability in all directions, and serving well. When I asked, almost everyone here finishes school around 2 or 3 PM and plays more than three sports, which builds a level of physical fitness through regular intense training that can't be compared to Chinese students who finish school at 5 PM and do homework.
The other is coaching. There are so many high-level coaches in the U.S. Yesterday, I played with a friend who is 1.94 meters tall, long legs, energetic, a former basketball player, and after just 7 months of learning, he has already reached a 3.5 level. I won a tough match with scores of 6:4, 3:6, 6:3, relying on my feel for the game. When I asked how he improved so quickly, he told me: I hired two former NCAA D1 players to teach me and play matches with me.
NCAA D1 players generally have a UTR between 12.5 and 13. There are over 3,000 such players in the U.S., spread across various states. In cheaper states, a UTR 13 coach charges about $60 an hour, while in more expensive states, it can be $120 an hour.
In contrast, in China, there are fewer than ten players with a UTR of 13 nationwide. Many provincial team players, after training hard for over a decade, only reach a UTR of 11-12, and reaching 13 is considered elite, enough to rank in the National Games.
Moreover, I want to tell everyone that the people playing tennis here in the U.S. are not even the ones with the best physical attributes. The best athletes are in football and basketball.
The gap is just that large. American tennis is terrifyingly strong.
