Cannot help but see the Turchinite phenomenon of overproduced elites here. Too many elite liberal-arts college grads were produced 1-2 decades ago expecting to do high-status (and not necessarily very political) "cultural stewardship" type work. Not enough slots for them. They got mad and were radicalized and put energy into attacking each other to clear out more slots.
