Floridians, please be aware of fake news: many accounts on X are sharing clips from a press conference that took place in September with misleading post copy that implies Florida has removed all vaccine mandates. As much as we would love for that to be true, sadly that is NOT true and not what leadership has is in the proposed legislation. To set the record straight: SB 1756 "Medical Freedom Act" and HB 917 "Medical Freedom Healthcare Act" do NOT repeal vaccine mandates in Florida (as currently written). These bills instead propose the following: 1)- Adds a conscience-based (conscientious) exemption. Currently Florida has medical and religious exemptions only, so offering a third exemption allows more freedom for families to choose what is best for them. 2)- Requires true informed consent. Vaccine administrators would be required to share more in depth information about each shot, including potential adverse reactions before they administer to patients. 3)- HB 917 (only) prohibits discrimination in healthcare based on vaccine status. We need SB 1756 to match that same language! Many patients and families are denied medical care simply because they are delaying vaccines or declining. This should not be allowed in the state of Florida as it is a form of discrimination. 4)-Both bills also allow ivermectin to be available behind the counter (no prescription needed, but under consult of a pharmacist).
