I have quoted at length from Teddy Roosevelt about how he believed that the 19th century produced a new American ethnicity. That just like the English ethnicity or the German ethnicity was the conglomeration of earlier peoples so the American experience had produced something new, a new American race.
Calvin Coolidge believed the same thing. He was not a propositionalist. Some will say that this is disagreeable or whatever. But my point is simply that those who hold these views have history on their side. They are not making it up, it is not new, it is not innovative. It is part of the American tradition.
___________
Coolidge:
Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag—and we have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people.
America has no place for the vicious, the weak of body, the shiftless, or the improvident. America must remain American. A country without a language and a country without a soul are alike impossible. Biological laws show that Nordics deteriorate when mixed with other races. There are racial considerations too grave to be brushed aside intelligently for any sentimental reasons. Biological laws show us that Nordics deteriorate when mixed with other races. Our country must cease to be regarded as a dumping ground.
We must realize that America is not a mere geographical expression, but a living organism, with a soul, with a destiny, with a mission. We must realize that America is not a mere congeries of states, but a nation, with a national life, a national character, a national genius. We must realize that America is not a mere refuge for the oppressed, but a land of opportunity for the free.
If we are to preserve America, we must preserve the American people. If we are to preserve the American people, we must preserve the American race. If we are to preserve the American race, we must restrict immigration to those who can be assimilated into the American race.
There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I say “American,” I mean American. The other kind can go to the foot of the line.
