Speed-of-light consensus is commoditized. Simple constructions allow for simple optimizations. When you connect directly to other network participants, every message is one hop away from its intended recipient and has no wasted bandwidth from layers of gossip indirection. Peers are blocked by their cryptographic identity, not just their IP, limiting the blast radius of a malicious actor, allowing for lazy evaluation of signatures.
