My statement on the California governor's race and the fight ahead.

This Fourth of July, I am taking a moment to reflect. Things are hard right now. They are probably going to get worse before they get better. But I love our country — and when you love something, you fight for it. Together, we will continue to fight for the ideals of our nation.

Republicans in Congress have voted to devastate millions of people across our nation — kicking Americans off their health care, shuttering hospitals, eliminating food assistance, and raising costs. This is Project 2025 in action.

Thanks to Senate Republicans, 17 million people will lose their health care. Thanks to Senate Republicans, rural hospitals will close. Thanks to Senate Republicans, three million Americans, including veterans and seniors, will lose food assistance. Thanks to Senate Republicans, families will see their energy bills go up by $400 a year. Senate Republicans are doing all of this and more — hurting working people across our nation — in order to pay for $1 trillion in tax cuts for billionaires. Three years ago, the Dobbs decision stripped away a fundamental right — leaving this generation of women with fewer freedoms than their mothers. Ahead of today’s anniversary, I surprised the @freeandjustus Storyteller Summit to thank the 100+ advocates they brought to Washington, DC for training and community building. They are leading with courage and optimism, and I am proud to stand by them as we continue the fight for reproductive freedom.

On Juneteenth, we celebrate Black freedom, resilience, culture, and the enduring strength of community across generations. We acknowledge our nation’s full history and the long, ongoing fight for freedom and justice for Black Americans. As a United States Senator, I was proud to co-sponsor a bill to make this day a federal holiday. As Vice President of the United States, it was my honor to stand beside President Biden as he signed that bill into law. Today and every day, let us celebrate the heroes of this movement and the work that lies ahead.

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers, stepfathers, uncles, godfathers, grandfathers, and friends who raise us with pride, joy, and endless laughter. And to @DouglasEmhoff, my best friend and a wonderful dad: Thank you for everything you do for our family. We love you.

I am devastated by the loss of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in a horrifying act of violence. Our prayers are with their children and all who loved them, and with State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were also targeted. Melissa Hortman was an outstanding public servant. She passed legislation that enshrined freedoms and increased opportunity for the people of Minnesota. I saw her impact firsthand when I was with her in Minnesota and will remember her compassion, humor, and sense of service. Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in our nation. Elected officials must be safe to do their job on behalf of the people. The hate and division that dominate our political discourse must end.

United States Senator Alex Padilla was representing the millions of Californians who are demanding answers to this Administration's actions in Southern California. This is a shameful and stunning abuse of power.
