Here's my take on Colbert: he was originally a genuine conservative Christian. He found that he could get laughs by slightly exaggerating his actual beliefs. The act worked because he was affectionately lampooning people like himself. The dissonance of getting approval for denigrating his own beliefs, along with his need for approval from the elites (arising from insecurity about growing up as a nerdy Christian who loved LotR, etc.) caused him to gradually jettison those beliefs. Now he hates himself for what he's turned into, and he turns that anger against the most socially acceptable targets. The act is no longer funny, because it's not an act. He's just angry. And the more approval he gets for hating the better person he once was, the more he hates himself, leading to a spiral of failure.
