The Beacon Chain introduced proof-of-stake (PoS) to the Ethereum ecosystem, the consensus logic and block gossip protocol which now secures Ethereum. It was merged with the original Ethereum proof-of-work (PoW) chain in September 2022. The Beacon Chain was essential towards Ethereum’s transition from an energy-intensive PoW system to a scalable and eco-friendly PoS system.
