I’ve been landing back into real life and online life. Had the pleasure of my first stop being @ToledoMuseum “Infinite Images” - an exhibition that showed me what’s possible when the traditional art world and web3 space truly collaborate - creating something neither could achieve alone. That experience stays with me as I reflect on the @MAE_TAEX drop. I’ve recognized a bit of pushback to the project, fears around extraction, a tribalist pushback that feels protective. On some level - I recognize this as a collective instinct guarding something sacred, fragile from being further commodified or stripped of meaning. I understand this impulse. We’ve seen too much creativity flattened into speculation and extraction. But here is why I think this project is different and important - and should not be dismissed but embraced. Marina Abramović has never chosen her medium with a clear path to commercial success or financial opportunity. Performance art was always fringe - and here on the fringe it still remains, like us, the misfits. She didn’t build her practice around what the market wanted; she created work that demanded the market expand to meet it. In many ways, we are doing the same, together. The investment and commitment is there. I’ve seen the @taex_com team showing up at Basel, NFC Summit - hosting events and experiences bringing traditional collectors into deeper dialogue with this space around this project. This is all to say - this collection allowed me to collect a work from an absolutely seminal artist I never thought would be possible and I wanted to reflect upon that significance.
