There have been some friends looking for jobs asking me how to get into a top-tier exchange. Don't easily think that just because you are a KOL or have rich experience in farming and trading, you can get in. You should know that top companies are never short of talent; what they lack is the right talent.
1. Understand that exchanges are essentially web2 companies, not web3.
Before joining an exchange, I mistakenly thought that as long as I had plenty of web3 experience, it would be smooth sailing. But I was wrong; the market field that exchanges target is not a web3 product, but a web2 product. Think about it carefully; essentially, it is the same as when we first started with WeChat, Xiaohongshu, and Xueqiu, hoping to attract web2 users. So, you must not position yourself as applying to a web3 company, as this will bring you significant trouble in your interviews.
2. The best preparation is no preparation.
This statement requires some reflection. In six rounds of interviews, none of the presentations I prepared were used. Each interviewer had completely different questions and focuses. So, this doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare, but rather that you need to prepare comprehensively. A good interviewer can assess your potential through multiple rounds of dialogue and place you in the right position.
3. Learn to ask reverse questions.
First, assume you are the interviewer, and you are the captain of the product. What questions would you have about this product? How would you improve it? What would you do if improvements were difficult? The thought process is always more important than experience. You need to let the interviewer know that hiring you will solve problems, reduce conflicts, and create new value. Also, don't fantasize that you can change an entire ecosystem once you get in; rest assured, there are many people smarter than you.
4. Don't beautify your job role.
You should know that an exchange is known for its solid market position and refined corporate structure. Don't fantasize that once you get in, you can achieve great success. Refer to Tencent, Alibaba, and Bilibili; unless you hold shares early on, you are still just a refined screw. But don't underestimate the screw; if it is well placed, it can lead to becoming a factory manager in the future.
Finally, I highly recommend that everyone try applying to an exchange. You will meet world-class interviewers and professionals, and this experience will tell you why these exchanges can become top-tier.
